Some solid results were registered last week, with the junior teams recording big wins, the Colts beating Toko and Girls Blue proving too strong for the Red team. The 1sts were well beaten by OBHS 1st XV, but the early 10 minute period of dominance showed that we are capable of matching it with the big boys.
Matches and venues for this weekend are as follows:
1st XV v John McGlashan 1st XV, Balclutha Showgrounds, 1pm
Colts v West Otago, Heriot, 1pm
U15 v Dunstan, SOHS #1, 11.15am
U14 v Dunstan, SOHS #2, 11.15am
With three teams at home for the first time this season, it is a great opportunity for our supporters to get along and watch some quality rugby.
The minivans for the Colts team will leave SOHS at 10.45am. Cost is $5 per player.
On Monday, the Girls’ teams will play their second competition matches. The Blue team is at home to BMC, the match kicking off at 4pm on SOHS #1. The Red team travel to the Gore Showgrounds to play SGHS Blue. Players will leave at the start of period 5 and travel by minivan. The cost is $5 per player and this must be paid on the day.
There will be a meeting of the SOHS Rugby Club on Wednesday, May 16th in the SOHS Library at 7.30pm. Anyone is welcome to attend. This is the forum to discuss issues such as squad selections, competition matches, travel and anything else related to SOHS Rugby.

RUGBY

Things continue to be very busy rugby-wise at present, with squads and coaches being finalised and pre-season training continuing in earnest.
The 1st XV has been named, following the impressive win over Telford last weekend. They will play in the Highlanders 1st XV competition once again in 2012.
We have an enlarged U16/2nd XV squad at present and for the first 3 weeks of the season they will run as a single team and play in the Otago U16.5 competition. We hope to eventually form two teams, but this will be numbers dependent.
The U15s are training hard and a squad will be named prior to the first competition match. Those players that miss out will be automatically dispensated to play U14 rugby.
We are still working on having two U14 teams, but numbers are tight. Similar to the U16s, we will run the boys as an enlarged squad for the first three weeks of competition grading.
The Girls’ are in a similar position, with either a very large squad or two teams. We hope to boost our numbers by including Catlin’s players, as we do with the boys. The Girls’ will once again play in the Southland competition, which starts in Week 2 of Term 2.
The first game of the season for the boys’ will be Saturday, April 28 and rugby will continue for 10 consecutive Saturday’s in term 2, before the traditional holiday break. Rugby resumes in Term 3 for approx. 5 weeks, including competition playoff matches.
All players will be registered in the first week of next term. This is compulsory for everyone. All teams will be provided with jerseys, with the remaining kit the responsibility of the player. This must include a mouthguard, which is also compulsory for all.
Subs have yet to be set, but they are likely to be $120 for the 1st XV and $60 for all other teams. Including in this cost are jersey washing fees, levies and other associated costs. This is exclusive of travel costs for all teams other than the 1st XV. Our travel is subsidised by grants and we have a maximum charge of $10 per trip.
The best of luck to all players representing SOHS this year and to those teams playing pre-season fixtures during the holiday period.
