Sports

Coordinator: Kim Dodds

South Otago High School holds many different sporting and cultural events throughout the year. Mrs Wright is responsible for making sure these events go smoothly and efficiently.

Sporting Events

Sport is a major part of the SOHS year. The promotion of sport in our school is very important. This is accomplished by involving students in: secondary school competitions, lunchtime activities, interschool country basketball and boys netball. The school also liaises with coaches and managers in order to keep them informed about what is happening.
This year has seen Sports Ambassador, Cory Hutchings, visit the school and impart his experiences and advice to our top sportspeople. Several other schools sent their students to SOHS to listen to Cory. Interchanges between SOHS and Gore take place each year and these all require careful organization but unfortunately the weather is out of our hands.

Swimming sports, coaching visits and rafting trips are held each year. Tournament Week is also a very important sporting occasion. Interhouse sports are valued as are Have-a-go days as they involve most of the student body.

Athletics

The highlight of the annual Athletic Sports day held at South Otago was the record breaking run of Andrew Whyte in the 400 metres. Andrew is a promising young athlete, with sprint titles at local and regional levels and is now specialising at the 400m distance. Over the last year he has overcome persistent injury issues to now be turning in outstanding performances on a regular basis.

In this case on a relatively soft grass track Andrew clocked 51.2 seconds to break a record that has stood since 1969. The old mark was 52.1 and was recorded by J Miller.

The track was a little slower than ideal, so the time was short of this seasons personal best which is near 48 seconds.

Andrew also broke the 200 metre record when he recorded 23.6, the old record stood at 23.7. Andrew has since been invited to Australia to compete in the 4 X 400m relay, all expenses paid.

To break a record, students have to perform on the day of the sports. There are still plenty more that date back to the sixties and one as far back as 1946, belonging to R Taylor in the Under 15 boys 100m. A number were run in yards and the times converted.

Abby Erwood in the under 14 girls discus was the only other record breaker on the day beating the old mark of 18.8 m with her 21.42 m throw.
