English Department
The English Department follows the guidelines of the Revised New Zealand Curriculum document. All English Programmes are developed from the three strands of Written Language, Oral Language and Visual Language. Our focus is to foster the development of the full range of skills and knowledge in all students of English. Also, we aim to provide up-to-date teaching and learning strategies in our English classes.
We aim to achieve this by establishing a culture that embraces goal setting and review and this involves working with the students to set individual goals and creating pathways for students to achieve these. Different learning styles are catered for by using a variety of strategies including co-operative learning, differentiated learning, feedback and feed forward and multi-level testing.
Junior Focus
Junior classes are particularly focused around literacy. Teachers routinely use literacy strategies and asTTle data to improve literacy levels. Writing skills are closely linked to literacy and are also a major focus. All junior teaching units have specific reading and writing learning objectives.
Senior Focus
Senior classes are obviously focused on NCEA. Teachers are working on getting a shift from ‘just enough’ to ‘personal best’. While NCEA is often the major focus for students, teachers are also focused on meeting all students needs and setting them up for success in their future careers.
