French
All courses will take a communicative approach and be based on the four skills of Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing, the three strands of Communication, Language Knowledge, and Cultural Knowledge, and draw on the key competencies of participating, using language, thinking, relating to others, and managing self
Year 9
Year 9 French introduces French language and culture to learners. Students will be working at levels one and two of the curriculum (Emergent Communication). By the end of this course, students will have the necessary skills for Year 10 French.
Year 10
Year 10 French is intended to build on and develop the skills and knowledge which were introduced in Year 9. Students will be learning at the level of ‘survival skills’, which means if they were dropped from out of nowhere into France, they could survive. This year students will go over topics that will help them achieve basic communication with a French speaker.
Year 11
Year 11 French is intended to continue on from Year 10 French. Students will be working at levels five and six of the curriculum (Social Competence) which means that they could interact with people and have everyday conversations.
Achievement Standards:
- Internal 1.2 Deliver a prepared talk in simple French on a familiar topic
- Internal 1.3 Converse in simple French in a familiar context
- Internal 1.6 Write crafted text in simple French on a familiar topic, with the support of resources
- External 1.1 Listen to and understand simple spoken French in familiar contexts
- External 1.4 Read and understand simple written French in familiar contexts
- External 1.5 Write text in simple French on a familiar topic
Year 12
Year 12 French is intended to continue on from Year 11 French. Students will be working at level seven of the curriculum (Personal independence) which means that they could interact with people about topics they haven’t studied and have more complicated conversations.
Achievement Standards:
- Internal 2.2 Give a prepared spoken presentation in French on a less familiar topic
- Internal 2.6 Produce crafted writing in French on a less familiar topic, with the support of resources
- External 2.1 Listen to and understand spoken language in French in less familiar contexts
- External 2.4 Read and understand written language in French in less familiar contexts
- External 2.5 Write text in French on a less familiar topic
Year 13
Year 13 French is intended to continue alongside Year 12 French. Students will be working at level eight of the curriculum (Personal independence) which means that they could interact with people about topics they haven’t studied and have more complicated conversations.
Achievement Standards:
- Internal 3.2 Give a prepared spoken presentation in French, using complex language
- Internal 3.3 Converse in French using complex language on a less familiar topic
- Internal 3.6 Produce crafted writing in French, using complex language, on a less familiar topic, with the support of resources
- External 3.1 Listen to and understand complex spoken language in French in less familiar contexts
- External 3.4 Read and understand written French, using complex language, in less familiar contexts
- External 3.5 Write text in French using complex language on a less familiar topic
