 Year 9 Visual Art Module: 

For 3 hours per week students work on short units to develop their practical knowledge of visual art, covering a variety of mediums and conventions. For example focus areas are drawing skills, painting skills, design and art elements, production of artwork and exposure to different contemporary art practices and styles.
 

Year 10 Visual Art Option:

Students develop their practical knowledge and understanding of art practices. Students are introduced to a variety of styles and movements in modern and contemporary visual art. Students are challenged to be creative and problem solve throughout the course. Focus areas extend on the skills and conventions from the previous year: drawing and painting skills, design and art elements, and the production and process of creating artworks. Students are exposed to other disciplines: sculpture, printmaking and mixed media studies. Students are also introduced to a variety of modern and contemporary art works with a focus on New Zealand Artists. The Year 10 course is designed to prepare students for NCEA level 1 in Year 11.
  

Year 11 Visual Art NCEA level 1: 

 
Students develop their practical knowledge and skill level in a year long study of a selected theme. In 2009 the theme was Still Life. Students are involved in various processes and procedures within the different mediums of the visual arts. 
 
The course consists of 21 credits
  • Internal, 1.2 AS90019 Use drawing processes and procedures = 5 credits,
  • Internal, 1.4 AS 90021 Extend ideas in other media and techniques = 4 credits
  • External, 1.3 AS 90020 Generate and develop ideas in making artworks – 2 panel portfolio =12 credits. 

Year 12 Visual Art NCEA level 2: 

Students work, as a class, on a set theme . This year the subject is landscape. Drawing is used as the central means to generate and develop ideas. It involves using various processes, procedures, materials and techniques from established practice to produce a sequence of works within a variety of painting techniques. Students are exposed to a variety of contemporary art practices to help challenge and inform their own art practice. 

The course consists of 18 credits
  • Internal, 2.2 AS90476: Generate and develop ideas using drawing processes and procedures in painting practice = 6 credits.
  • External, 2.3 AS 90479 Produce a body work within painting to show understanding of art-making methods and ideas = 12 credits 2 panel portfolio.

Year 13 Visual Art NCEA level 3:

The course is aimed at students involved in the research and practice of art making. They look at the visual culture we live in and choose an individual path and direction of study for the course. Students are exposed to different techniques and motivations to extend their art making to produce original and creative works. Students are well prepared for art study at tertiary level and encouraged to appreciate different forms and styles of visual art.
 
The course consists of 18 credits
  • Internal, 3.1 AS 90659: Research and analyse approaches within established painting practice.
  • External,  3.3 AS 90667: Produce original work within painting to show extensive knowledge of art making methods and ideas.
