International Students

Testimonials

Here is a sample of what some of our international students have to say about their time at South Otago High School.

Jenny

Hi I’m Jenny Ruan (Zhe Yi Ruan)

I’ve been to New Zealand and studied at SOHS for two and a half years I enjoyed. It’s a very different environment from where I used to live in, which is a big city with a hundred million population down in southern China.

People here are quite friendly. I`m glad that I had a really really good host family, who were fully care about me, it was nice for them. It was cool to work with Art and Music teacher in school; they were nice and really patient. I made a group of kiwi friends that supports me a lot, through ups and downs.

It`s good to have all kinds of opportunity, to try new things, such as Kapa Haka, stage challenge, peer reading. I really enjoyed doing haka as house group events.

Also I might go to University in Wellington next year, hope to see my friends and families again.

Kelsey

Hello I am Kelsey Yung

I have been at South Otago High School for 2 years and I really enjoy the life here. Balclutha is very different to Hong Kong, it is a nice place for study. The teachers in South Otago High School are very helpful and friendly, and the students are really kind to help each other. I am very glad I met my host family, they are so lovely and look after me very well. We just like a family and I am so happy to stay with them. I still keep in touch with my host family and teachers when I back to Hong Kong. I love the life here and having a wonderful time.

Markus

Hi I am Markus.20160524_091711

I am 16 years old and I am from Germany.

I am visiting SOHS for 5,5 months and it’s an awesome school. We went tramping for Outdoor Ed three times. One of our tramps was at the beautiful Lake Manapouri. I also went on a trip to Mt. Cook with the Geography class and there you could see all the beauty of NZ! I have played a lot of sport at and for South Otago High School. You can choose between so many sport activities and so many different subjects that you can’t do in Germany for example, cooking or building. The people here are friendly and it was easy for me to make new good friends. I too, got a really friendly and nice host family. They helped me whenever I needed help and they showed me a lot of places on the southern South Island.

I will miss NZ and the people at South Otago High School when I go home.

South Otago High School is a great place for your study and life. The teachers are very helpful, and students at school are very friendly, all help each other. I have got a lot of friends to study with both at school and during weekends, and it is a lot of fun. Studying sometimes sounds a bit boring, but with your friends, it becomes very exciting. Subjects offered at SOHS are also very interesting. Class style is not like lots of Asian school where students are just to sit in class and listen to teachers, but all the students actually participate in class by asking lots of questions, and discussing the subject. Other than study, there are plenty of social activities going on. Cultural activities are one of the highlight of this school. Individual music lessons are offered for those students who wish to play. And even if you have never played before, you can start learning an instrument. I started playing Violin and Flute, and because those lessons are very valuable, I am in the school orchestra.
