The Music Department
Welcome to the South Otago High School Music Department
As a department we aim to instil an appreciation for and involvement in all aspects of music. We have modern facilities including three studio practice rooms and a wide range of instruments and resources.
Classroom Music
Year 9 Music - This is an 8 week module which aims to give a broad overview of musicalknowledge. It includes theory, listening skills, popular/rock music, and some practical skills.
Year 10 Music - Full year option for three periods a week. Covers the history of music, performance, composition, theory, and listening skills.
Year 11 Music - NCEA Level 1 Music. Covers music works, solo and group performance, composition, theory, and listening skills.
Year 12 Music - NCEA Level 2 Music. Covers music works, solo and group performance, composition, theory, listening skills, and instrumentation.
Year 13 Music - NCEA Level 3. Covers music works, solo and group performance, composition, theory, listening skills, and arrangement.
Itinerant Music Lessons
All students have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through the Itinerant Teachers of Music Scheme (ITMS). The school has a wide range of instruments available for hire, and specialist instrumental teachers take lessons on these each week.
Outside of the classroom
Students are encourage to become involved in a range of Co-curricular music activities - e.g. Choir, Orchestra etc.
