Teachers' Industrial Action
10 September 2010
Dear Parent/Caregiver
TEACHERS’ INDUSTRIAL ACTION
The Post Primary Teachers Association has advised the South Otago High School Board of Trustees that teachers, who are members of the union at our school, will be taking strike action on the day of September 15th. This will affect the majority of our teachers.
As the seniors will be on examination leave, the strike will affect mainly Year 9 and 10 students. After careful consideration, the Board has decided that due to the unavailability of staff, it would be impracticable for Year 9 and 10 students to attend school for instruction during the period of the proposed strike.
Senior examinations will continue as normal and will be supervised by teachers who are not PPTA members.
In these circumstances, it would assist the School if the students not taking examinations are able to remain at home, or if you are able to make alternative arrangements for care, please do so. Otherwise, the school may be able to provide supervision for any students who do attend school during the strike. Please ring the school office by 5pm on Monday, 13th September, if you find that you are in this position.
I appreciate that this may be an inconvenience for parents and students alike. Please be assured that student safety is our main concern. Thank you for your assistance. Please contact Mrs Anne Shanks if you have any queries relating to the Board’s decision.
TEACHER ONLY DAY
The staff of the school will be engaged in professional development on Friday 17th September. During this Teacher Only Day, classes will not run for Year 9 and 10 students and there will be no supervision for them.
Senior examinations will continue as normal.
It is unfortunate that these two events occur in the same week. However, the Teacher Only Day had been in planning for some months and we have arranged for speakers to fly in from other parts of the country. Our teachers will be sharing this opportunity along with four other secondary schools from our district who will be attending on the same day. The school has done its best to minimise disruption to learning.
Yours sincerely
MR CHARLES HAKKAART
Board of Trustees Chairperson
