Gifted and Talented Astronomy Trip

Towards the end of last term, 9 members of the Astronomy class attended the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand Annual Stargazing Weekend in Herbert at Camp Iona.

We travelled to Herbert Friday night and arrived in time for stargazing. Saturday was taken up with Astronomy lectures, bottle rocket competition and some free time to explore the nearby river. After another evening of stargazing we left Sunday. We had the opportunity to use a large variety of telescopes up to 18’ in diameter and saw some amazing sights. It was the first time a school group has participated in a RASNZ weekend and at the end of the weekend we were asked by organisers to ‘please come back next year!’ Thanks to parents Mr and Mrs Hall and Mr Jackson for driving and participating, we had a great time!
