12th February 2010

The school has settled well into the first full week of uninterrupted classes. I have been impressed by the way that the vast majority of students have come back from the Christmas break with both a positive attitude and a determination to succeed. Almost all students are now in their options, with only a small number who have yet to be approved for courses that are run by outside providers.

This week I spoke to the students in assembly about pride. I asked them to take pride in themselves, their school and in their community. In particular I have asked all students to wear our uniform correctly - whether at school or out in public. I ask for your support, as parents, with this.

Last Friday, a small group of teachers and students went up to East Otago High to take part in the traditional Maori welcome which they extend to both new students and staff. Our Kapa Haka group gave a fine performance as we handed Lennox Sharp over to his new school. I have had emails of appreciation from both Mr Sharp and the Principal. Hopefully we have forged a new link for cultural exchanges in the future.

This week we have had the elections for the Head Students, the School Council, House Group Leaders and the representative for the Clutha District Youth Council. I will announce these positions at assembly next week. Along with Peer Support Leaders, link students for the Tautuku camps, other roles such as Peer Reading Tutors, there are a great number of opportunities for our senior students to provide leadership and to give service to the school. I encourage our seniors to get involved wherever they can.

Next week our year 9 students will engage in some outdoor education. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Year 9 form classes will do the Catlins River Walk. This is a good opportunity for the students to get into the outdoors and to bond as a class group.

Have a good week.
