26th March

The Year 9 and 10 social that was run on Wednesday evening was a great success. The students who attended got into the spirit of the evening and had fun. The Year 13’s from the School Council did some excellent work in organizing and running the event. My thanks to the parents who came in at the end of the night to pick up their sons and daughters from the school hall.

Winter sports teams are now into selection trials and I note that training is well under way for some codes. We have a huge amount on offer here at South Otago High School. I encourage every student to get involved and to try some sporting or cultural activity during this year. This newsletter and the school notices always have information that students can pick up on, don’t miss out!

The school office processes a great deal of lost property. I was in the office last week as some of this was being handed back. This process was made difficult by the very small amount of gear that was named. Items of clothing and personal equipment, such as calculators, need to be clearly named please.

John Osborne was in the school on Thursday. He spoke to our Year 12 students. He is a passionate advocate for driver training and runs the ProActive Drive programme. This programme teaches new drivers about car control and is totally free. Students who wish to be involved can pick up a form from the school office. This must be returned by next Wednesday. The course will be run at Forbury Park Race Course in Dunedin.

Good luck to our Touch team as the travel away to the South Island Secondary Schools Touch Tournament. Once again, a team effort between parents and teachers has ensured that we have the funding in place to allow our team to travel.

Congratulations to Emily Bowden of Year 12. She has been selected to be the Clutha representative in the Youth Parliament. This event only happens once every three years. I am sure she will represent us with distinction.
