School Info

School Info

South Otago High School is located in Balclutha which is 80km south of the city of Dunedin. Founded in 1926, it is one of the oldest full secondary schools outside of the main cities in the South Island.

We pride ourselves on being a welcoming community and we provide a safe and friendly environment for our students to learn and grow. We aim to provide a broad range of educational experiences and opportunities to give our students the best start in life.

The school is well resourced and sits picturesquely overlooking 17 hectares of grounds, courts and playing fields. The current roll is 520, which makes us large enough to offer a broad curriculum but also small enough to offer individual attention to our learners.

Students achieve excellent results nationally in academic, sporting and cultural activities. We place a strong emphasis on pastoral care and support and on involvement in the wide range of activities that the school offers. Our goal is to provide students with educational opportunities that will challenge and enable them to achieve to the best of their ability and make an effective contribution as citizens.

At South Otago, we take great pride in our ability to welcome students from all over the world. We have a growing group of students from Hong Kong, and we have hosted exchange students from such far flung places as Brazil, Argentina, Norway, Germany, the United States and many more!
