Library

The school has a very well equipped library, including a valuable historical book collection.

The library provides a wide range of facilities and resources.

SOHS provides easy access for all students to internet and email services. All students are provided with email accounts and network access. The information technology suite has advanced software for information gathering and processing.

Availability and access to digital and multimedia facilities provides students with key ICT skills which are important in today's world. The school is proud to send young adults into the world certain that their technological skills, knowledge and confidence will serve them well in the future.

The year starts with orientation for the new Year 9’s. They are shown how the library works and how easy it is to search for resources.

For seniors, research is an integral part of the curriculum, requiring them to be not only technologically savvy but also able to find written resources. Students, at Years 11 and 12, work on NCEA wide reading standards and it can be pretty daunting trying to find  appropriate texts.

Student librarians are very important in the running of the library. Their job is to shelve, issue and return books during interval and lunchtime.

Library Report 25th February 2011
‘A Waltz for Matilda’ by Jackie French, is a novel based on the Banjo Paterson Bush Ballad about Matilda, and her journey towards independence. It’s also a story about others in her life who have very little apart from their dreams. This is a great read and very timely as so many people in Christchurch have very little other than their dreams. Also very apt as an amazing team of Australians and teams from other countries are helping out. Let us not forget all the Kiwi helpers'. All catalogued and ready to be read.........
