ICAS Science Competition

This competition will be held on Tuesday 8th June 2010 in the SOHS Lecture Theatre.  ICAS is an ancronym for International Competitions and Assessments for Schools.  It will involve around 30 students.

Year 11 Science

Year 11- NCEA Level 1

Students have the choice of following an Achievement Standard course, or a Unit Standard course.The Achievement Standard course consists of:

  • Biology (5 Credits)
  •  Chemistry (5 credits)
  • Physics (5 credits)
  • Investigation (4 internal credits)
  • Research project (2 internal credits)

Junior Science

Year 9

All students have 4 hours of science per week, and study the following topics; Getting Started,  Space, Sight and Sound, Life Processes, Solids, Liquids and Gases, Ecology and an Environmental Study.

Year 10

All students have 3 hours of science per week, and study the following topics; Earth Science, Atoms and the Periodic Table, Electricity, Forces, Motion and Work, Inheritance, Chemistry in the Home and Physics in Context.

Gifted and Talented Astronomy Trip

Towards the end of last term, 9 members of the Astronomy class attended the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand Annual Stargazing Weekend in Herbert at Camp Iona.
