Music

As a department we aim to instil an appreciation for and involvement in all aspects of music. We have modern facilities including three studio practice rooms and a wide range of instruments and resources.

Classroom Music

Year 9: This is an eight week module which aims to give a broad overview of musical knowledge.  It includes theory, listening skills, popular/rock music and some practical skills

Welcome to the South Otago High School Music Department

Classroom Music

Maori

Te Reo Maori is the ancestral language of the Maori people of Aotearoa. It derives from eastern Polynesia and is most closely linked to the language family that includes the Cook Islands Maori, Tahitian and Hawaian languages.

Te Reo is a rich and complex language and culture, which includes many forms of visual language, body language and gesture, dance and drama. It has also been catergorised as a visual culture expressed in a multitude of ways, carved and woven tools, weapons and architectural structures such as Marae and Whare Karakia.

Achievement objectives covered in this course

1.1 greet, farewell and thank people, and respond to greetings and thanks

1.2 introduce themselves and others and respond to introductions

1.3 communicate using days of the week, months and dates

1.4 communicate about personal information, such as age, name, nationality and home

All courses will take a communicative approach and be based on the four skills of Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing, the three strands of Communication, Language Knowledge, and Cultural Knowledge, and draw on the key competencies of participating, using language, thinking, relating to others, and managing self

The Arts Department aims to:

  • encourage the learning of the arts
  • encourage students to be creative, explore and participate in a variety of artistic endeavours
  • encourage lifelong learning of the Arts
  • extend artistic abilities through the diverse courses being offered in the various arts disciplines 
  • stimulate creative actions and responses by engaging the senses, imagination, ideas and feelings.
