English Department Week 3 - From the English Department

How did you get on with explicit vocabulary this week?

Did you manage to discuss any words with your child? Or did they pick up a new book? Well done!

Literacy tip of the week: Next week we will be working on building vocabulary lists in the context of learning in each subject. Your child’s teacher will be building word lists around the topics being taught so you can ask them what words they have heard in each of their subjects (Or just pick one subject to talk about to start with if you have a reluctant chatter at home).

At home you could do the same with vocabulary from a hobby you enjoy! Or you could think about building vocabulary around feelings. I have been working with my son around naming his emotions to help him deal with them and have found resources from Wildling Books really helpful, particularly the “How do I feel” dictionary - we can be building our vocabularies in all sorts of ways to not only support learning, but wellbeing as well.

What we’re reading: Recently I read The Tomo by Mary-Anne Scott from our school library. It is a story about a young kid who goes to stay on a family farm over Christmas while his parents are dealing with a family issue. His beloved dog ends up in trouble and he has to decide to listen to the station manager to give up on the dog or embark on a dangerous mission to rescue him. It’s a good read for a year 9 or 10 student and has some great moments of challenge and determination. It’s a simple, and sometimes predictable, story but it was entertaining enough and a NZ author, which always helps to imagine the story.
