Battle of the Pans

On Wednesday our senior Level 3 Hospitality class competed in the Battle of the Pans competition which was hosted at South Otago High School and the first time the competition was held in the South Island.

Battle of the Pans is a competition run by Service IQ who is a vocational education provider with a hospitality industry based background allowing our students to undertake Unit Standards at an industry based level. This was a great opportunity for our students to compete against another school - Tokomairiro Area School and really hone in the skills they have learnt in hospitality.

There were some live cooking competitions. Burger and Cafe Sandwich category and a Pasta category and the following students competed. Zara-Lee Tuhura - Burger, Nicole Sinclair - Bao Bun, Lindsay Lambert - Carbonara Pasta, Lilly Gooch - Creamy tomato   and spinach pasta and Katy Gilder Creamy cheese and Cauliflower Pasta. There was also a static category for baked goods. This was a cafe cake, cupcakes and biscuit category which included both Anzac and Melting moments.

Tokomairiro students and SOHS students entered in some high quality, exceptional entries. Katy Gilder and Zara-Lee Tuhura did Cafe Cakes, Lindsay Lambert and Lilly Gooch - Biscuits and Nicole Sinclair, Cartina Latu and Baranika Kiteke did cupcakes.

The competition was marked by a points system. In their lives, it was similar to Masterchef on the TV where the judges walk around and critique and mark on your cooking skills, personal hygiene and food safety practices and the final plated product. This was done in a time allocation - 45 minutes for the burger/sandwich and 60 minutes for the pasta. The static entries were also marked with a point system.

The static results:

  • Zara-Lee Tuhura a bronze and a silver
  • Baranika Kiteke a silver
  • Cartina Latu a gold
  • Lilly Gooch silver
  • Katy Gilder a gold
  • Nicole Sinclair a Bronze
  • Lindsay Lambert a silver.
  • For the Live cooking
  • Zara-Lee a bronze
  • Lilly Gooch a silver
  • Katy Gider a bronze
  • Nicole Sinclar a bronze
  • and Lindsay Lambert a silver.

The overall winner of the Live cooking categories with the highest scored points with a silver was Lindsay Lambert for her Carbonara and took away as a prize a set of digital scales and the opportunity to work alongside a chef for a day's mentoring. This will be completed at a later date with Service IQ. Well Done Lindsay.

I am incredibly proud of what my senior students accomplished with this competition and they should be extremely proud of themselves!!
