Literacy Tip of the Week

Literacy Tip of the Week: SEXY Paragraphs. For the final week of term to wrap up our focus on writing this term we have been talking about SEXY paragraphs.

While that might sound a little scandalous, it is memorable! It is an acronym for what to include in a paragraph. There are many different acronyms schools all around the motu use, which all essentially mean the same thing. Each paragraph should have one main idea which is clearly outlined in the first sentence. It then needs to be explained with examples and developed in some way to show the depth of understanding or how it addresses the question being asked. Having clear paragraph structure helps writing develop ideas fully and helps students express themselves well. The attached images are going up in classrooms around the school to help remind students how to organise their ideas in paragraphs to make sure they are writing well.
