Road Safety Programme

We are delighted that we have secured places for all Year 12 South Otago High School students to attend a road safety education day at Telford Polytechnic.

To the Parents/Caregivers of Year 12 Students

We are delighted that we have secured places for all Year 12 South Otago High School students to attend a road safety education day at Telford Polytechnic. The feedback from previous participants has been outstanding and is great timing for students as they gain restricted and full licences or are travelling in cars with other young drivers who have a full licence. The day is organised by the RYDA – Road Safety Education Programme.

The date for this will be 15th August and it will take place during the normal school hours. Students need to go to the hall at the start of the day to have a roll taken. Students will return before the end of school in time for the buses home.

Students will need to bring their own packed lunch and water as we do not have the time to stop and pick up food on the way.

As a school we consider this to be an essential part of a young person’s education and expect students to attend. I would like to acknowledge the Board of Trustees for making this a free trip for the students by contributing towards the costs of transport and the day itself.

Students will take part in the following workshops during the day:

  • Workshop 1:     Speeding and stopping
  • Workshop 2:     Hazards and distractions
  • Workshop 3:     The “I” in drive
  • Workshop 4:     Road choices
  • Workshop 5:     After the crash
  • Workshop 6:     A case study of a young person in a car crash

Please be aware that the material covered during the day may trigger strong emotions. If your child has previous experience of a car crash or other similar experience there may be times where the material is difficult for them. If students feel upset or emotional during a presentation, they need to talk to the teachers who will be supervising during the day, and we will accommodate their needs.

If you have any questions around this contact me at [email protected] or call the school on 03 4180517. Further information on these topics can be found at www.rse.org.nz
