From the English department - Week 5 and 6

Last week’s summarising strategy was a key word hunt.

Week 5 Literacy Tip of the week: last week’s summarising strategy was a key word hunt. This is a guided activity to help students find, process and summarise texts using keywords. You could ask your child to give you 5 key words they remember from a lesson this week.

Week 6 Literacy Tip of the week: This week students have been using a guided template to summarise what they’re reading. You could ask them to summarise a lesson they have enjoyed recently. Are you noticing them getting any better at summarising?

What we’re reading: How to Loiter in a Turf War by Coco Solid. I have only just started this one but am intrigued by the title! The new curriculum is (rightly so) requiring the inclusion of more texts from Aotearoa so in the limited time I have I am endeavouring to read as much as possible! This one is a piece of autobiographical fiction, which follows a day in the life of three friends navigating roads, relationships, and racial tensions in their home of Tāmaki Makaurau. - Ms Beaumont

Because I am combining two weeks into one, you get a choice for your screen free activity this week!

Option One: Pretend there’s a power cut… and read! Set 20-30 minutes before or after dinner one night this week and everyone reads something together. Modelling reading to your children is one of the most powerful ways to encourage reading which helps develop their literacy and cognitive skills.

Option Two: Play Masterchef! Having your child plan, prep and cook a meal helps them develop skills in planning, thinking ahead and timing, following instructions, specific language and vocabulary, as well as a bit of chemistry involved with ingredients and temperatures etc. Plus, you get a night off cooking!
