Literacy Tip: 1. Promote a positive attitude to literacy

Welcome back to 2024! I hope everyone has had a restorative break and did some things which brought you joy. We’re back with more literacy tips this year. In the classroom staff will continue their focus on building literacy skills and I will continue sharing tips for you in the newsletter.

The learning of South Otago High School students happens beyond the classroom. Hopefully these tips will help you connect with your child and help them see you are interested in what they’re learning at school and supporting them on their journey.

Your attitude towards learning has a profound effect on your child. Even if you have to fake it, a little positivity goes a long way.

  • Share your own reading habits with your child.
  • Display and share interesting texts that are relevant to what your child is learning.
  • Encourage your child to share when and what they are reading.
  • Share the challenges you yourself are experiencing with writing to show that writing is a complex and challenging process.
  • Talk with your child about the different times writing is needed in personal life.

What we’re reading: New staff member Amanda Fiveash thoroughly enjoyed ‘Shakespeare’s Star Wars’ by Ian Doescher. It blended all things Shakespeare into the world of Star Wars, with lots of comedy. My favourite part was the R2D2’s monologues.x
