Week Five Literacy Tip: Refreshing the Basics!

Staff have been refreshing the basics with students over the past few weeks.

We’ve been discussing parts of speech. The intention is to ensure all students have a sound understanding of how language is formed to communicate effectively. We will be moving on to sentence structure (syntax) and punctuation later in the year. But for now I thought I might ask you to cast your mind back to your own school days. Do you remember what a noun, verb and adjective are? If not, maybe ask your kid - if they’ve been paying attention it will give them a chance to be the expert and hopefully make those precious connections to their learning! Give it a go and let me know how you get on!

What we’re reading: Over the summer Mrs Ward read "The Bookbinder of Jericho" by Pip Williams. It's an historical novel about a young woman who works for Oxford University Press during World War I. The book focuses on women getting the vote, women's involvement in war, and on the barriers experienced by working class people in the early 20th century. It also offers an interesting insight into bookbinding; something I didn't know much about before! I really enjoyed the novel which helped show a different perspective of wartime from the ones we often see in novels and films. Would definitely recommend this novel to others!
