Debating

Last Sunday I took 3 keen debaters to Dunedin to watch the Otago Regional Debate Finals.

There was an impressive range of schools and teams present. We witnessed debates on the topics of; "If the Football Ferns were winning 6-0 against Samoa, should a consolation goal be awarded?" and "Should the Feminist movement oppose the use of makeup?"

We are starting a debate team at SOHS and any interested students should contact Ms Beaumont. Debate is a valuable skill as you need to be able to think quickly, speak clearly and be well informed on a wide range of issues. Hopefully with a bit of practise we will be able to send a team to a few regional competitions in the near future.

While we were at the university we stopped by the Marine Science Department outside the museum with the "touch tank" set up to celebrate "Sponge Day". So while we were there to learn about debating, it shows the value in extra curricular activities, as you never know what you're going to come across!
