From the English Department

Welcome back to Term Two! I hope you all found some time to read something enjoyable in the break. This term I am heading back to broad basics with my literacy tips of the week with staff which I will share with you. Hopefully you'll see some application at home and can have discussions with your students to help engage with their learning.

We're starting by talking about promoting a positive attitude to literacy

  • Develop your own knowledge of what literacy looks like in your job or hobbies – What are typical text types? What are good examples of writing? What types of writing tasks are common? What specific vocabulary do you know which your child might not? Could you share it with them?
  • Share your own reading habits with your child.
  • Share interesting texts that are relevant to your job or hobby.
  • Encourage your child to share when and what they are reading.
  • Share the challenges you yourself are experiencing with writing to show that writing is a complex and challenging process.
  • Talk with your child about the different times writing is needed in school and in personal life.

What we're reading:

Mrs Jory has just read Ruins by Rajith Savanadasa. She says it's a really interesting read set in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the Civil War. It's a story of a family picking up the pieces, and deals with race, class and gender. She really enjoyed the characters and also learning about another country's history.
