In Term 3, Year 9T students explored the Earth and Space concept, with a particular focus on the solar system.
As part of their learning, students connected their understanding of the solar system to Matariki and created a Matariki Science booklet. In this booklet, they explained what Matariki is, the cultural significance of each star in Māori tradition, and how each star connects to science. They also described the changes observed in the night sky during Matariki, including the arrangement of stars.
To deepen their understanding, students focused on three specific stars:
- Waipunarangi – linked to the water cycle
- Ururangi – connected to wind energy/windmills
- Tupuānuku/Waitī – related to the ecosystem
Students then created science models based on these stars. They thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience and demonstrated creativity and enthusiasm in their learning.
