Otago Polyfest - Te Kapa Haka o Iwikatea
Tēnā koutou katoa. Our Kapa Haka Rōpū have been working hard throughout the year, especially are leadership group - Kyla, Kaya, Jared and Harlem who have helped bring our performance together. This year we have had a number of performances - Our own school Matariki Parakuihi (Breakfast) to the Puaka Matariki Iwikatea (South Otago's own Matariki celebrations) to many Mihi Whakatau. This year is also the first year we have embarked on Te Ao Haka for L1 and L2 students. We want to thank our tutor Timikuka Walker, our new Deputy Principal and kaiako Miss Tuhega and our also Mr Beeby who has been there for us throughout the year. We also want to thank Miss H for coming with us to Polyfest aswell.
Otago Polyfest - Tupulaga Otako i Saute Tālofa Lava. This is the first time ever that South Otago High School has had a Pacific Island group perform at the Otago Polyfest. People may not know, but there are 100's of Samoan's living in Balclutha with 4 Samoan Churches. We also have a small Fijian and Kiribati community living in Balclutha as well. This year has been significant for our Pacific Island students at South Otago High School where we establish a Tupulaga class for our Pacific Island students. We have attended many events from a special movie screening of Tinā, to Pasifika Voices, celebrating Samoan Language Week, singing the Samoan National Anthem in assembly, going to Faiva o Su'a Tatau Otago Public Lecture, having Ana Teofilo come to our school for her 'Return to paradise' workshop and also having Masoe Antonio Seiuli & Salā Esmay-Eteuati (Associate Dean Pacific) from the University of Otago – Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka Otago Business School/Division of Commerce visit us. We are grateful for this opportunity and want to thank Salu, Miss Tuhega our new Deputy Principal and Miss Penn for everything you have done for us.
