As we have had a few cases of strep throat at South Otago High School we thought it would be good to offer some information on what to do if you suspect your child may have this infection.

Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. It causes pain and inflammation of the throat and tonsils. It's important to treat strep throat with antibiotics to prevent complications.

Symptoms of strep throat include:

• a sore throat
• pain when swallowing
• red and swollen tonsils - sometimes with white patches on them
• swollen glands around the neck
• fever

Some tamariki may also experience:

• headache
• tummy pain
• feeling sick and vomiting
• rash

If your child complains of a sore throat you can call Healthline on 0800 611 116 or take them to see a health professional. A health professional can examine your child and test for strep throat.

If your child tests positive for strep throat please remember to report them as unwell through our attendance line and ensure they finish the full course of their antibiotics to prevent any rebound infection.
