When it comes to young drivers, there are plenty of assumptions about driving experience, ability, and what happens once a young person obtains their licence.
Street Smart provides a practical, hands-on experience designed to help young drivers improve their awareness on the road. But we know there can be assumptions about who the programme is for and what students can gain from attending. Here are three misconceptions we hear regularly:
“Street Smart is only for brand-new drivers.”
Street Smart is designed for young drivers at different stages of their driving journey. Training days expose participants to practical driving situations they may not encounter during everyday driving or traditional driver training, helping them become more aware if they face these situations on the road.
“I’m already a good driver, so I don’t need Street Smart.”
Young drivers continue to be over-represented in serious and fatal crashes on New Zealand roads. Street Smart helps bridge the gap between learning to drive and navigating the realities of everyday driving, giving participants opportunities to develop greater awareness, understanding and decision-making through hands-on experience.

REALITY: Understanding the road rules is essential, but it is only one part of becoming a capable and aware driver. Some driving situations are difficult to fully understand until they are experienced. At Street Smart, participants can put their knowledge into practice in a safe, controlled environment, guided by experienced coaches.
HELP YOUR STUDENTS GAIN MORE REAL-WORLD DRIVING EXPERIENCE
If you have students aged 15-19 who are learning to drive or already have their licence, we’d appreciate your help in making them aware of Street Smart and our upcoming training days. We have training days running over the September / October school holidays, with places currently available at Hampton Downs, Taupō, Feilding, Christchurch, Cromwell and Invercargill.
We'd greatly appreciate your support in sharing the Street Smart programme with your school community and encouraging students and their parents or guardians to register.
