Derived Grade Exams and CAA Literacy and Numeracy Assessments.

Senior derived grade exams will be in week 1 of term 4. 

These are REALLY important because if you can’t sit your end of year official NCEA exams due to serious illness, accident, or family emergency, we can apply to NZQA for a derived grade. This means you can still gain your credits for the final assessment if you pass your derived grade exam.

Last year I applied for derived grades for 7 students. 7 students who could not sit at least one exam because of serious illness, accident or family emergency or bereavement. None of these things were expected and this is why you cannot think; “Oh, that won’t happen to me. I don’t need to worry about practice exams.” If this does happen, you need to contact me or your teacher and we will help. However, a derived grade can’t be applied for because you just didn’t feel like coming to school the day of the exam, it does require a legitimate reason. 

Your teachers will have discussed with your class what your exams will be and how to prepare for them. If you are unsure - ASK! You should be thinking about creating a study timetable in the next few weeks, including over the holidays. If you’re not sure how to study for a specific exam ask your teacher or mentor for help. 

I have emailed out the exam timetable, and it is in this newsletter. If you have a clash please email me or your mentor. If you happen to miss an exam for an unavoidable reason, you will sit a catch up - but please avoid making appointments during the exam period where possible. 

CAAs are next week. Reading is on Monday, Writing is on Tuesday, Numeracy is on Wednesday and catch ups are on Thursday. 

Mentor time will be first, swapped with Period 1. Year 9 and 10 will be sitting first thing. You need to go to mentoring to have the roll taken then go straight to the old gym with your computer. Seniors will be sitting Period 3 and 4. If you are a senior and would prefer to sit in period 1 and 2 that is fine please let your teacher know and come to the old gym. 

Please make sure you have logged into your NZQA account this week to make sure your password works. If not, please reset it before the day of the test. When you log into the NZQA portal, you can see past assessments to familiarize yourself with them.
