Each year students who are learning an instrument with the itinerant music teachers are invited to participate in a workshop with other Year 7 to 10 students from across Dunedin and surrounding areas.
This year, 8 of our string and woodwind players took part, having learned four pieces during their weekly lessons. The string orchestra rehearsed in the Queens High School hall for the morning, while the woodwind & brass concert band used the Kings & Queens Performing Arts Centre. In the afternoon, the two groups performed to parents and supporters.
With over 100 players in the string orchestra and approximately 70 in the concert band, this day provided a wonderful opportunity for students to experience playing in a large group and benefiting from meeting others at a similar stage in their playing journey. All of our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to continuing their music journey in 2027. There are many opportunities for students at SOHS to learn and instrument and be involved in a variety of groups and special events, such as this workshop.
