With summer approaching, I wanted to let you know about SIS Maritime Training's online Maritime VHF Operator's Certificate course, which is well suited to students who will be spending time on the water, whether boating with family, fishing or diving.
The certificate comprises two NZQA Level 3 unit standards (19491 and 19492), totalling five NCEA credits. Students don't need to be studying at Level 3: the course is very accessible and open to students at any level, and it includes video elements that are helpful for students with diverse learning needs. It is also a recognised first step for students considering a maritime career.
A VHF operator's certificate is required by law for anyone using a marine radio (except in an emergency), including recreational boat owners.
The course is delivered completely online: students log in on their phone or computer and work at their own pace. The certificate has no age limit or expiry date, students receive it by email on completion, and we report achievement to NZQA.
Cost is $200 incl GST.
SIS Maritime Training trains staff for New Zealand's largest fleet operators, including NZ King Salmon, Sanford, Real NZ and Cougar Line, as well as independent fishing companies.
