Principal’s Address 31st March 201731st Mar 2017
Kia Ora Tatou
For the last three weeks we have hosted a group of seventeen students from Thailand. In conversation with their teachers they have acknowledged the wonderful welcome and friendly attitude of the Balclutha community and the students who have worked with them during their stay. I would like to offer my thanks to the support that everyone who has come into contact with this group has given.
Next week the Thai students will be returning home to Bangkok and their home towns to the North and East of the country. They will be home in time for the Thai New Year Festivities of Songkran. We wish them a safe journey home and a happy new year. We look forward to hosting another group next year and already have plans for our future collaboration.
Visit to China
Today is also my last day for the term. On Sunday I will be travelling to China as a guest of the Confucius Institute based in Wuhan. During my time away I will be visiting school and be teaching a class during one of my visits. This will be a new challenge as my Mandarin is very limited! During my time away I will also be visiting our sister school and meeting with students, teachers and the principal there too.
In my absence Mr Paul McDowall will be acting principal.
Since my recent notice with regard to attendance I have received a number of requests for students to be excused from school to join family trips overseas for a variety of reasons. Thank you to the families who have done this in good time, I have passed on the dates of absence to teachers. However, it is the student’s responsibility to speak to their individual teachers to ensure that they talk about the work they will be missing and to keep up with assessment activities.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all students, their families and whanau a happy and safe Easter break and I look forward to the start of the new term on Monday 1st May.
